Some Current Favourites

It’s been a minute since I’ve blogged, but I’m feeling inspired to jot more.

I’m currently taking an interesting course on the new music business, with special emphasis on the Topspin platform. Learning lots. Thanks Berklee and Chandler Coyle.

The timing is great as I’m ready to start sending out some new songs…

For the moment, I thought I’d share a few things that are occupying my airwaves. I’d be interested to know what’s grabbing your eyes and ears, in the comments section below.

CURRENT FAVES

Love this song -“A Good Man” by Erin Barra. Hope to see her play live. She’s got the stuff.

Intriguing video.

My quick comment might be a bit of spoiler, so watch it first, then use the toggle below…

Provocative, yes? What’s going on there? I felt prompted to watch it again and then I read somewhere that the director and Barra were exploring Stockholm Syndrome.

Clever how they decided to do it in a “Memento“-film style…

A tweet from Sonic Scoop made me aware of Barra.

Next in high rotation is the Sade Live CD & DVD.

When my friends at Highlife Records say a particular record is “a must”, I listen. The Touré-Raichel Collective is their latest favourite. Trancey, thoughtful, evocative.

Be sure to check Track 7.

Israeli superstar Idan Raichel and Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré first met at an airport in Germany in 2008 while both were on tour. From this chance encounter an artistic kinship was born, culminating in an unscripted recording session that took place one afternoon in November 2010 in a small Tel Aviv studio. Joined by Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane, Idan and Vieux improvised a masterful selection of songs that capture the unbridled creativity and inspired collaboration of these four brilliant musicians. The Touré-Raichel Collective was formed and the songs they recorded are the foundation of the album The Tel Aviv Session.

My pal Chris made me aware of Allen Stone. What an amazing soul singer-songwriter. And you get the impression he’s a really good guy. Real.

Here he is on Daryl Hall’s great show. Looking forward to his show in Vancouver in the Fall.

And yeah, Alabama Shakes rocks.
